Leslie Iwerks explores how the imaginative worlds of Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and Avatar journey from the screen into immersive experiences at Disney Parks.

Chris and Will began their careers inspired by the magic of The Walt Disney Company, where they discovered how imagination could become something audiences could see, feel, and experience. For generations, Disney has invited people into extraordinary worlds shaped by fantasy and storytelling. Premiering August 20 on Disney+, Disney Worldbuilders follows the dreamers whose ideas moved beyond the screen to become places audiences could physically enter. Directed by Leslie Iwerks, the documentary explores the filmmakers and creative leaders behind these imaginative worlds—and the remarkable journeys that brought their visions to life.

Iwerks brings together Disney Legends, award-winning filmmakers, and company leaders to reflect on the inspirations and defining moments that shaped their careers. Among those featured are Bob Iger, Frozen writer and director Jennifer Lee, and Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro. Through their personal stories, the documentary examines the creative minds behind beloved films, characters, and attractions while offering rare glimpses of the new lands and experiences shaping Disney’s future.

Chris and Will had the opportunity to review Disney Worldbuilders ahead of its premiere and were especially moved by the excitement of watching a creator’s imagination come to life first on screen and then as an experience audiences can enjoy in the real world. “The documentary also shows the time, patience, and collaboration required to transform an idea into something tangible,” they said.

The documentary presents an interesting concept and remains an engaging watch. Disney Worldbuilders is most compelling when it reveals the human emotions behind Disney’s vast fictional worlds and demonstrates how worldbuilding can continue long after a story first reaches the screen. However, its brief runtime leaves many of the Imagineers who physically transformed those stories into theme-park experiences largely outside the frame. Although the title may suggest a technical examination of Imagineering, the film focuses more closely on the creators’ personal journeys and their emotional reactions to seeing their imagined worlds become real.

The film leaves several important questions unanswered. What compromises were necessary to transform these stories into physical experiences? How did projects such as Monsters, Inc. progress from their earliest ideas to the finished worlds audiences recognize today? As one of the world’s leading entertainment companies, Disney has a creative process worthy of being explored from beginning to end. Bob Iger’s perspective provides valuable corporate history, particularly regarding the acquisitions of Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and 21st Century Fox. At times, however, the documentary shifts from examining that history to celebrating it, slightly blurring the line between thoughtful reflection and corporate tribute.

Chris and Will felt that director Leslie Iwerks could have gone further in exploring the challenges and personal experiences behind each creative journey. With numerous influential figures competing for attention in less than an hour, potentially revealing conversations often feel like polished introductions rather than fully developed examinations. Spending more time with the creators—and less on the company’s executive perspective—could have given the documentary a more personal and emotionally satisfying focus. Disney fans, Parks enthusiasts, filmmakers, and those interested in the creative process will find plenty to appreciate, while casual viewers may enjoy its inspiring stories without finding the deeper examination its subject deserves.

For devoted Disney fans, the familiar worlds, behind-the-scenes footage, and personal reflections make Disney Worldbuilders an easy recommendation. Those hoping for an in-depth examination of Imagineering, corporate decision-making, or attraction development may find the documentary less complete. Nevertheless, it offers an inspiring and entertaining celebration of the creative minds who transform imaginative stories into experiences audiences can enter and enjoy.

Disney Worldbuilders succeeds as an affectionate celebration of imagination and the creative minds whose stories moved beyond the boundaries of the screen. Although inspiring, polished, and frequently moving, it does not fully explore the deeper and more complicated process of transforming those ideas into physical worlds. The documentary is certainly worth watching, but viewers may finish it with unanswered questions—and an appetite for more. Ultimately, it feels more like the promising first chapter of a series than a complete examination of its fascinating subject. Chris and Will give Disney Worldbuilders 7 out of 10 smiles.

Featuring Bob Iger, Josh D’Amaro, Jennifer Lee, James Cameron, Dave Filoni, Jared Bush, Jon Favreau, Kevin Feige, and Pete Docter, Disney Worldbuilders premieres August 20 on Disney+.
