August 12th, 2025- There are many first and third-party companies that develop and produce video games, but there are also quite a lot of companies that are considered independent developers. There’s always a diamond in the rough when it comes to these, because even though that one company may not be a top company at that moment in time, their product certainly looks and plays like it, and that’s what counts. This is important because Nintendo has introduced a way for independent video game developers to shine and showcase their products and skills. The presentation is called Indie World Showcase, and it displays upcoming games for the Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch.

Mina The Hollower from Yacht Club Games: Descend into a frightful world of action-adventure as Mina, a renowned Hollower, on a desperate mission to rescue a cursed island. Burrow beneath hazards and monsters, whip foes into oblivion, and gear up with an arsenal of sidearms and trinkets. Explore a vast world filled with pixel-perfect graphics, masterful gameplay, beastly bosses and infectious music. Encounter a cast of bizarre characters, search out secrets and illuminate the omnipresent darkness in this brand-new game from the developers who brought you Shovel Knight. Mina the Hollower launches on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch Oct. 31.

I had the opportunity to preview this game and right off the bat, I absolutely fell in love with it. The music, the gameplay and the aesthetic are the things that really stood out to me. First, the music: what can I say about this? With a soundtrack that’s polished and an 8-bit chiptune style that doesn’t sound emulated, I’m impressed! It captivates you, whether it’s a cinematic cutscene, a catchy melody, an entrancing level theme or ambient sound effects, it really hits. The overall gameplay is very neat; I enjoyed how it feels like a classic first-party video game. You have a variety of different weapons and abilities and those can be leveled up to help you progress throughout the story. The ability to borrow underground is helpful, because if there’s a spot you aren’t able to get to, you can borrow underneath to get to it. It also helps that you can use this ability to defeat certain bosses. The aesthetic is gorgeous!! Take classic Game Boy Color-esque meets modern day graphics, and then add some nice layering; you have a blend of modern and retro console gaming. I really enjoyed the detail of the cutscenes as they were nicely animated.
